Saint-Émilion, located in the heart of the Libournais region, is a medieval city perched on a limestone hill. Its history dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by the remains of villas from that period. In the 8th century, a Breton monk named Émilion settled as a hermit in a cave in the forest of Combes, a site that later became the Hermitage of Saint-Émilion. His reputation as a miracle worker attracted many disciples, laying the foundation for a prosperous religious community. Over the centuries, the town developed, notably thanks to its renowned vineyards, and has preserved remarkable architectural heritage, earning it a UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1999.
Regarding tourism, Saint-Émilion attracts many visitors each year, drawn by its historical heritage and prestigious wines. The number of visitors is estimated at over 1 million annually.
